Phad Art

Phad Art brings ancient narratives into the quiet rhythm of the villa.

About the Art Form

Phad Art is a traditional scroll painting that originated in Bhilwara, Rajasthan. These paintings narrate elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods, created as visual storytelling pieces rather than static artworks.

Traditionally, Phad paintings were carried by priest-singers and unfolded after sunset. The word Phad comes from the local dialect meaning “fold,” referring to the way these scrolls were opened gradually as stories were narrated.

How It’s Made

The entire process of creating a Phad painting is rooted in natural materials and traditional methods. The base cloth is prepared using natural fibres, providing a durable yet organic surface.

The colours are handmade by the artists using natural pigments sourced from stones, flowers, plants, and herbs. These pigments are mixed with water and natural gum before being carefully applied to the cloth, layer by layer, with precision and patience.

What It Represents

Phad Art represents devotion, storytelling, and cultural memory. Each painting unfolds a narrative, capturing moments of belief, ritual, and daily life connected to local deities.

A distinctive feature of Phad Art is that the painted figures are flat and face each other rather than facing the viewer. This inward orientation reflects the idea of dialogue and storytelling within the artwork itself, rather than performance for an audience.

Art in the Villa Space

Within the villa, Phad Art introduces a narrative presence into the space. Its detailed compositions invite guests to pause, observe, and slowly follow the stories depicted across the surface.

The artwork adds cultural depth to the room without overpowering it, allowing the space to remain calm while carrying layers of meaning.

Why It’s Perfect for This Room

Phad Art was chosen for this room because of its storytelling nature. The quiet, unhurried environment of the villa allows the artwork to be experienced gradually, much like how it was traditionally revealed after sunset.

Its earthy colours and narrative flow complement the room’s warm tones and reflective atmosphere.

Want To Experience the Villa ?

Guests often find themselves drawn into the details of the painting, discovering new elements each time they look. The inward-facing figures create a sense of intimacy, making the artwork feel personal rather than performative.

It becomes a moment of connection between art, space, and time.
