Kawad Art

Kawad Art brings movement, memory, and storytelling into the villa space.

About the Art Form

Kawad Art is a traditional storytelling craft from the village of Bassi near Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. More than a painting or sculpture, a Kawad is a portable wooden shrine designed to unfold narratives through a sequence of painted panels.

Traditionally carried from village to village, the Kawad served as a travelling temple and a visual medium for sharing stories of gods, heroes, and family histories.

How It’s Made

Kawads are handcrafted by the Suthar community of Bassi using traditional carpentry techniques. The structure is made from wood such as mango or semal and assembled with multiple hinged panels that open outward.

Each panel is hand-painted using mineral-derived pigments in a traditional palette of reds, yellows, greens, blues, black, and white. The entire process involves both precise woodworking and detailed painting, requiring skill and patience.

What It Represents

Kawad Art represents a journey from the outer world to the inner sacred space. As each panel opens, a new part of the story is revealed, leading inward toward the central sanctum where the principal deity is placed.

The inward-facing narrative mirrors devotion, memory, and the idea of storytelling as a sacred act.

Art in the Villa Space

Within the villa, Kawad Art introduces movement and interaction. Whether displayed closed or partially opened, it invites curiosity and engagement, encouraging guests to explore the artwork slowly.

It brings a sense of ritual and storytelling into the space without disrupting its calm atmosphere.

Why It’s Perfect for This Room

Kawad Art was chosen for this room because it naturally encourages pause and discovery. The quiet setting allows guests to appreciate its layered panels and symbolic structure at their own pace.

Its presence adds depth and cultural richness while remaining intimate and personal.

Want To Experience the Villa ?

Guests often feel drawn to open and observe the panels, discovering stories hidden within the structure. The experience feels interactive and reflective, creating a moment of connection rather than passive viewing.

It becomes a conversation between the artwork and the viewer.
