Molela Art

Molela Art carries faith, history, and storytelling shaped entirely by hand.

About the Art Form

Molela Art originates from the village of Molela in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, near Nathdwara. Rooted in centuries of tradition, this terracotta art form is deeply tied to faith, ritual, and community life.

Created by the Kumhar (potter) community, Molela Art has been passed down for generations as a living expression of belief rather than mere decoration.

How It’s Made

Molela artworks are hand-modeled using a special blend of locally sourced clay mixed with sifted cow dung, which adds strength and helps during firing. Unlike wheel-thrown pottery, these works are created as flat, hollow relief plaques.

Each figure is sculpted entirely by hand without the use of molds. After drying, the pieces are fired and then painted in bold, earthy colours made from natural mineral pigments.

What It Represents

Molela Art represents devotion, protection, and community memory. Traditionally, the plaques depict folk deities such as Shri Devnarayan, often shown on horseback, and Nagaraja, the snake god.

These images reflect the spiritual beliefs and everyday lives of tribal communities who have relied on these artworks as sacred offerings for centuries.

Art in the Villa Space

Within the villa, Molela Art introduces an earthy, grounded presence. Its raw texture and sculpted forms add warmth and depth to the space, creating a quiet connection to land and tradition.

Whether displayed as individual plaques or as part of a larger composition, the art feels rooted and timeless.

Why It’s Perfect for This Room

Molela Art was chosen for this room because of its natural materiality and strong sense of grounding. The terracotta surfaces complement the villa’s textures and tones, adding character without overpowering the space.

Its presence creates a balance between craft, faith, and contemporary living.
