Pichwai Art

Pichwai Art brings sacred storytelling and quiet grandeur into the villa space.

About the Art Form

Pichwai Art originated in the 17th century in Nathdwara, near Udaipur. The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit words pich (back) and wai (hanging), as these paintings were created to serve as backdrops behind the deity in the Shrinathji temple at Nathdwara.

These artworks are deeply devotional, created to depict different aspects of Lord Krishna’s life through rich symbolism and detailed imagery.

How It’s Made

Pichwai paintings are traditionally hand-painted with great precision and patience. The process involves detailed line work, careful layering of colours, and intricate detailing that can take weeks or even months to complete.

Each element is painted with intention, ensuring harmony between figures, motifs, and the overall narrative of the artwork.

What It Represents

The central figure in most Pichwai paintings is Shrinathji, depicted with a raised hand holding the Govardhan Hill. Surrounding him are recurring elements such as cows, peacocks, gopis, trees, and lotuses, each carrying symbolic meaning.

Together, these elements represent devotion, protection, abundance, and a deep connection between nature and the divine.

Art in the Villa Space

When placed within the villa, Pichwai Art adds a sense of quiet grandeur and spiritual depth. The detailed compositions invite closer viewing, while the balanced layouts allow the artwork to sit gracefully within the space.

It becomes a focal point that feels grounded rather than overwhelming.

Why It’s Perfect for This Room

Phad Art was chosen for this room because of its storytelling nature. The quiet, unhurried environment of the villa allows the artwork to be experienced gradually, much like how it was traditionally revealed after sunset.
